Psychotherapy
Psychotherapy has various names, including, therapy, counseling, talk therapy, etc. Psychotherapy can look different according to the style of the therapist and the preferences/needs of the client. Generally, in psychotherapy, you will work you your therapist on addressing various issues that may be causing difficulties with emotions, thoughts, or behaviors and come up with a plan that you and your therapist can work on that leads to change, healing, and feeling better. At Arbourway, PLLC we use various therapeutic models and techniques that allow us to help a variety of clients. Some of them are: Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Solution-Focused Therapy, Existential Therapy, etc. We describe two of those we use below, EMDR and Play Therapy.
Play Therapy
Play therapy is truly our favorite at Arbourway PLLC! Play is a beautiful language of expression and communication that we are born with. No words are required. As we develop, we learn other languages, such as, English or Spanish, and we learn to communicate through talking in our verbal language. Our play language, however, never really leaves us. As adults, we use our play language through hobbies, sports, and even work. The language of play helps us learn, communicate, build trust and mastery of tasks, regulates emotions, helps us problem solve, and elevates our self worth. Young children are especially adept at using their first language of play to work through the hard things of life and heal. And… play is pure fun! When we are able to have fun, our defenses go down, so we can process through things we might typically avoid. We look forward to meeting your child and playing together, because play, isn’t just play, it is a language natural to children that we use to help them heal. EMDR
EMDR is short for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing. EMDR is a therapy that helps with healing from traumatic or distressing life experiences. What is distressing can be different for each person, so EMDR can be used for various issues including: depression, grief, PTSD, anxiety, pain, abuse, etc. The focus of EMDR is less on talking and more on helping the brain naturally resume healing of emotions, thoughts, or behaviors that came about as a way to cope with distressing life experiences that may not have been fully processed. Utilizing eye movements, sounds, or taps, EMDR helps people to reprocess unresolved traumatic memories in the brain and feel better.
